Hospital Profile

  • The Harnett Health System (HHS) is currently a one hospital system: Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital (BJRH).
  • HHS was awarded a Certificate of Need (CON) to build an additional 50-bed hospital in the central part of the county approximately 20 miles from the current campus. It is planned to open in 2010.
  • BJRH is a 101-bed not-for-profit acute care health facility with:
    • A six-bed CCU
    • A Women's and Children's floor including a six-bed secure Pediatric unit, Birthing Center, women's surgical rooms and a level two nursery
    • A recently opened Surgical Specialty unit in May 2007 provides a patient-to-nurse ratio of 1:4.
    • Seven Observation beds
    • 23 Emergency Department (ED) treatment rooms and two trauma suites; 14 beds equipped with Cardiac monitoring.
    • Specialty services include: OB, Orthopedics, Urology, General Surgery, Neurology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Cancer Center (provided by Cancer Centers of North Carolina), Pediatrics, and consultation support in Nephrology and Cardiology.
  • The hospital is working on securing psychiatric video-conferencing support from a local area group of psychiatrists.
  • The hospital admits over 7,000 patients annually and provides 38,000 ED visits.
  • An average Length of Stay (ALOS) is four days.
  • BJRH received the Press Ganey Compass Award in 2006 and the JCAHO Gold Seal of Approval with a top two percent score for the hospital, in February 2007.
  • There are over 40 physicians within the market that have a high level of interest in supporting a Hospitalist Program.
  • BJRH's Primary Service area encompasses four counties (Harnett, Johnston, Sampson and Cumberland) with a population of 104,000.With anticipated future growth 2011.
  • Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital has a Medical staff of 69active physicians, 36 consulting physicians and 8 Locum Tenens.
  • The hospital employs over 600 full- and 26 part-time employees.
  • The hospital has a long history of being a well-run organization financially and its strategic plan continues to indicate a strong vibrant growing hospital for the future. The hospital has grown in market share capture from 32 percent to 45 percent in the last three years.

Hospitalist Program Profile

  • The Hospitalist Team of four to six full time physicians will be on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Each full-time hospitalist will provide up to 192 hours of clinical professional medical services per month consisting of 12 and eight hour shifts.
  • The Hospitalist Team provides service response for codes, consultations, inpatient episodic medical care, CCU procedures, unassigned ED call and patient admission/discharge.

  • The Population in Harnett County is growing at a three percent rate annually within the hospital's primary service area (this projection does not include the effects of the Base Realignment and Closure [BRAC]).
  • Multiple School districts and private schools are available. Easy access to 12 four-year colleges and universities. The surrounding area is home to four technical and community college facilities.
  • Local cultural and leisure attractions include Harnett Regional Theater; General William C. Lee Airborne Museum; Averasboro Civil War battlefield, museum and graveyard; Coats Museum; Coble Water School and Camp; Dunn-Erwin Trail; Hammerstone Scout Museum, Harnett County Indian Museum; Old Bluff Church; and the Campbell House. Nearby Raven Rock State Park features hiking, fishing, camping and canoing.
  • Local festivals and events feature the annual Dunn North Carolina Touchstone Energy Cotton Festival in November, Boogie Down on Broad Street, the nationally known National Hollerin' Contest, State singing convention and several other local community festivals.

  • The Dunn area sits at a convergence of an extensive transportation network. North and South links include I-95, US-301 and the Seaboard System Railroad, while I-40 and US-421 provide east to west route. Commercial air transportation is available at nearby Raleigh/Durham International Airport and charter flights and private service are provided at the Hartnett County Regional Jetport.
  • Nearby Fayetteville features Ft. Bragg (the largest military installation, and the primary site for BRAC), Pope Air Force Base, the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, art centers, theaters, shopping, parks, sports and many special events.
  • To the north is the metro area that includes Raleigh (our capital city), Durham, and Chapel Hill, better known as the Carolina's thriving Research Triangle Park (RTP) which you can get to within one hour. Offerings include visual arts, dance, music, theaters, museums, historical events, multiple large shopping areas, civic activities and sports including the National Hockey Association 2006 Stanley Cup winner, the Hurricanes.
  • If you want to spend a day at one of the many beach communities in North Carolina, you can reach the beaches within one and one-half hours.
